TREE PRESERVATION ORDER (TPO) SERVICES IN HULL & EAST YORKSHIRE

Tree Preservation Orders protect important trees but add strict rules for any work. Access Tree Care helps you manage TPO trees legally with clear advice and qualified pruning.

Access Tree – Tree Preservation Order Services

Trees are a vital part of our environment, and some are protected by law to safeguard their long-term health and survival in towns and villages, helping keep green spaces for future generations.

If a tree on your property is covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), you must understand your responsibilities and get proper consent before any work is carried out.

At Access Tree Care, we provide expert TPO support across Hull & East Yorkshire, including guidance on TPO rules, tree inspections and help with any applications for work.

Access Tree Care is a trusted local TPO company, helping homeowners, landlords and businesses manage protected trees safely and legally across the region.

What is a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)?

A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is a legal notice made by your local council to protect certain trees, groups of trees or small areas of woodland on your land or nearby properties.

TPOs are usually placed on trees that add important visual, historical or environmental value to a street, garden or wider area, helping to preserve the character of the place over many years.

If a tree on your property has a TPO, you must get written permission from the council before pruning, felling, lopping, topping or damaging it or its roots, so the work is carried out safely and legally.

You apply to the council explaining what work you want to do and why, and they decide whether to approve, refuse or adjust the request before any work can go ahead by law.

Why Are TPOs Important?

Tree Preservation Orders protect important trees from removal, heavy pruning or damage. Because these trees shape the local landscape, councils place extra controls on what work can be done.

  • Landscape value: Protects trees that shape streets, views and the overall character of an area.
  • Wildlife habitats: Preserves mature trees that provide nesting, shelter and food for birds, bats and other wildlife.
  • Development pressure: Prevents important trees being removed or harmed when land is redeveloped or new buildings go up.
  • Environmental benefits: Safeguards trees that improve air quality, provide shade, reduce noise and help cut pollution.

Understanding these reasons makes it easier to see why work on TPO trees is tightly controlled and must follow the rules.

How to Check if Your Tree Has a TPO

If you’re unsure whether a tree on your property is protected by a Tree Preservation Order, it’s always worth checking before you plan any work or speak to a contractor.

Your local council can confirm if a TPO is in place, usually through their planning department or an online map of protected trees and conservation areas.

If you’d like help, Access Tree Care can check the status of your tree, explain what the TPO means in plain English and suggest safe options if you still need work doing.

Carrying out unauthorised work on a protected tree can lead to significant fines and legal issues, so always confirm its status before pruning, felling or making any other changes.

TPO Application Process

If you want to carry out work on a tree with a Tree Preservation Order, you must get proper written permission from your local council before anything happens on site.

  • Initial assessment: A qualified arborist, such as Access Tree Care, inspects the tree and confirms what work is needed and whether an application is required.
  • TPO application: We prepare and submit the forms to the council, explaining the work you’d like done and the reasons for it.
  • Council review: The council considers the request and may visit the site to check how the proposed work could affect the tree and surroundings.
  • Decision: The council either approves, approves with conditions or refuses the application; only then can any agreed work go ahead.

At Access Tree Care, we handle paperwork and council contact, keeping things simple and compliant with TPO rules.

What Happens if a TPO-Protected Tree Becomes Dangerous?

A tree with a Tree Preservation Order can still become dangerous through disease, storm damage or decay. If this happens, you may need urgent work to protect people, buildings or public spaces nearby.

Emergency work is usually allowed without prior permission if there’s immediate danger to life or property. Record the problem, take photos if you can and tell the council quickly.

At Access Tree Care, we provide emergency TPO services, assessing hazardous trees and recommending safe, appropriate work. We carry out reductions, removals or make-safe operations in line with TPO rules.

We also help you contact the council, explain what’s happened and provide supporting information after the emergency. That way the tree is made safe and you can show the work was necessary.

A big thank you to Access Tree Care who came and pruned my apple trees today. I would highly recommend them for any tree pruning you need. They are very professional and were really helpful explaining what needed to be done. They pruned 2 apple trees and got rid of the ivy which was damaging other trees in my garden. They didnt just hack away at the trees like in the past where people have come and butchered the trees. I will always use them in the future. Thanks

Scott came to quote us for the removal of a dead birch within 2-3 days of us getting in touch and was much lower than other quotes we received. Him and the lads did a great job of quickly removing the tree, stumping it and tidying up some nearby trees for not too much extra at all. They tidied up well after themselves also. Would thoroughly recommend.

Scott and his team took down a diseased Beech tree that we were worried might fall towards the house in high winds today. His team cleared up and left the garden in great order despite having squeezed us in as an emergency. His price was way below what we expected to pay. I can’t speak highly enough of the service we received.

Highly recommend this local company. Did a great job removing a very large tree that had spread out into 3 separate trunks. It’s width covered the width of our garden and over next doors. Massive tree. Great price. Stacked wood neatly so we can chop for our wood burner. Removed/took away all branches leaves etc. Really happy with the final result. Great set of local lads - very professional. Photos show after result. Don’t have a photo of the tree before it got taken down.
