Access Tree Pruning & Thinning Services

Trees add shade, privacy and character, but when they outgrow their space they can block light, spoil views or become unsafe around homes, gardens and driveways.

Crown reduction gently reduces the height and spread while keeping the tree’s natural shape. Our qualified arborists remove selected branches so it stays balanced, healthy and in proportion.

We provide crown reduction for homes, landlords and businesses across Hull & East Yorkshire. If you need a local crown reduction specialist, we can advise on the best approach.

We offer clear advice before any work starts, agree the result you want and tidy up properly when we’re done. If you’d like a free quote or tree check, just get in touch.

What is Crown Reduction?

Crown reduction means pruning selected outer branches to reduce a tree’s overall size while keeping its natural shape. It’s used when a tree outgrows its space or feels too large near homes, gardens or driveways.

Unlike topping, which chops straight across main branches and can weaken a tree, crown reduction works back to healthy growth points. Smaller branches are kept so the tree can recover properly and stay stable.

This method lets the tree grow more sustainably while still looking balanced and attractive. It reduces excess weight on heavy limbs, helps prevent storm breakages and lets more light reach gardens and windows.

It’s one of our most requested pruning jobs and is carried out by qualified arborists trained in modern crown reduction techniques. We use safe climbing and rigging methods to protect both the tree and your property.

When Should You Consider Crown Reduction?

Crown reduction helps when a tree outgrows its space or starts causing problems. It’s ideal if you want to keep the tree but bring its size and spread back under control.

  • Blocking light: Tree shading windows, gardens, patios or seating areas, making spaces feel dark.
  • Too close to structures: Branches near roofs, walls, sheds, chimneys or power lines, risking damage.
  • Safety concerns: Large limbs over paths, driveways, parking spaces or roads where people walk.
  • Storm damage: Broken, over-long or unstable branches after high winds that leave trees unbalanced.
  • Poor tree health: Weak, crossing or diseased limbs affecting the tree’s structure and long-term safety.

Reducing the crown brings the tree back into proportion and eases these issues. You keep the tree’s benefits, just with safer, lighter growth.

Benefits of Crown Reduction

Safety & Protection

Reduces heavy branches and overall size to significantly lower failure risk and protect nearby homes, paths and play areas.

Healthier Trees

Removes weak or diseased branches so the tree can put energy into strong new growth and stay structurally sound.

Light & Air

Opens the canopy so daylight reaches lawns, borders and seating areas, making gardens brighter and more inviting.

Neater Appearance

Keeps trees in proportion with your home and garden, improving views, kerb appeal and the overall look of your outdoor space.

Our Crown Reduction Process

At Access Tree Care, we take a professional, careful approach to every crown reduction job. Each tree is different, so our experienced arborists tailor the work to your tree, your property and the result you want.

  • Initial consultation: We assess the tree’s size, health and location to agree the best reduction for your garden or site.
  • Selective pruning: We remove chosen branches with precise cuts, reducing the crown while keeping a natural, well-balanced shape.
  • Safety first: We plan safe drop zones and work away from buildings, power lines and people so the job is carried out safely.
  • Complete clean-up: We chip and remove arisings as agreed, leaving paths, lawns and beds neat, tidy and ready to use again.
  • Aftercare advice: We explain how to look after the tree so it recovers well and stays healthy and stable over time.

We’ll always talk you through the plan before we start, so you know exactly what to expect from your crown reduction.

How Crown Reduction Differs from Other Tree Pruning Techniques

Crown reduction is just one way to manage a tree’s size and shape. Other pruning methods focus on light, density or clearance rather than overall height and spread.

  • Crown reduction: Reduces the tree’s height and spread by shortening selected branches, keeping a natural, balanced outline.
  • Crown thinning: Removes some inner branches to reduce canopy density, letting in more light without changing the tree’s overall size.
  • Crown lifting: Takes off lower branches to raise the canopy, giving better clearance over paths, roads, parking and lawns.
  • Other pruning work: Can include dead-wooding, formative pruning or selective branch removal to deal with specific issues.

If you’re unsure which option is right for your tree, we can assess it on site and recommend the best approach for your space and goals.

A big thank you to Access Tree Care who came and pruned my apple trees today. I would highly recommend them for any tree pruning you need. They are very professional and were really helpful explaining what needed to be done. They pruned 2 apple trees and got rid of the ivy which was damaging other trees in my garden. They didnt just hack away at the trees like in the past where people have come and butchered the trees. I will always use them in the future. Thanks

Scott came to quote us for the removal of a dead birch within 2-3 days of us getting in touch and was much lower than other quotes we received. Him and the lads did a great job of quickly removing the tree, stumping it and tidying up some nearby trees for not too much extra at all. They tidied up well after themselves also. Would thoroughly recommend.

Scott and his team took down a diseased Beech tree that we were worried might fall towards the house in high winds today. His team cleared up and left the garden in great order despite having squeezed us in as an emergency. His price was way below what we expected to pay. I can’t speak highly enough of the service we received.

Highly recommend this local company. Did a great job removing a very large tree that had spread out into 3 separate trunks. It’s width covered the width of our garden and over next doors. Massive tree. Great price. Stacked wood neatly so we can chop for our wood burner. Removed/took away all branches leaves etc. Really happy with the final result. Great set of local lads - very professional. Photos show after result. Don’t have a photo of the tree before it got taken down.
